    Does FAXMAN4 V4.6 work on WIN 7(32bit) and (64bit)?

    Hi,

I installed FAXMAN4 v4.6 on WIN 7(32bit) but the result is not because it could not detect any fax modem. However, when I tested with FAXMAN4 v4.44, it could detect the modem. Anyone has this experiance??

By the way, before my installation, I found that the two versions FAXMAN4.EXE's icon on my WIN 7 desktop have some different. The V4.44 has a Security Shield but the V4.6 is the original icon. I downloaded both version of FAXMAN4 from DATA-TECH by same user account on the WIN7 PC. Does it cause the problem above??

    Regards,

    KC

The new FaxMan SDK V 4.6 drivers includes 64 bit support and we've tested it successfully on Windows 7 machines.  I'm not sure how the two different versions of the executable residing on your desktop will cause the issue you've reported.

The number one reason that autodetect fails to detect a modem is that the port is blocked by another app or service.  Please double check this and stop the app or service.  You may have to reboot once as well.

    Hi,

Regarding the autodetect fails, I sure that it was FAXMAN4 software problem not the port is blocked by another app or service.

Let me repeat my info., I am testing a WIN 7 (64bit) pro,

    1.  I downloaded the V4.4 and V4.6 from DATA-TECH web site. The software icon has different, V4.4 has a security shield, V4.6 no security shield. They are download by same user account at the same time.

    2. I install V4.6 and run a fax program from "C:\Program Files (x86)\FaxMan4\Samples\VB6\faxtest4.exe", it was NOT able to detect any fax modem.

    3. Uninstall V4.6.

    4. Install V4.4 and run faxtest4.exe, it was able to detect fax modem.

    5. Verification. uninstall V4.4 and install V4.6, the autodetect problem happen again.

The about test was under same user account and no reboot.

Could you advise what I should review?

    Regards,

    KC

Re: Does FAXMAN4 V4.6 work on WIN 7(32bit) and (64bit)?

Yes, please attempt to find and send us the following files (all located, by default, in the System32 folder):

    • faxman4.ini
    • faxman-YYYYMMDD.log where YYYY is the year, etc.
    • portXX-YYYYMMDD.log where XX is the port number of the port associated with the modem

If you can't find the files in that loation, look in the same path where FaxMan4.exe is installed.

Please send those files to support@data-tech.com.

Re: Does FAXMAN4 V4.6 work on WIN 7(32bit) and (64bit)?

I found that FAXMAN4 did not put FAXMAN,FAXMAN4.DB,FAXMAN4.EXE,FAXMAN4.INI,FAXMAND.DLL files into C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. They were put into C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64 folder automatically.

Also, I can't send you the files you mentioned above, as they are not created after I click the autodetect button.

Thus, I did same test with V4.4 on same PC WIN7 (64bit), all faxman files were put into same folder C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64 but the FAXMAN4.INI file was created after I click the autodetect button.

    Hope it can help.

    Regards,

    KC

    KC,

Please send us whatever files you can that get created after the autodetect is ran.  In this case, you should get an updated INI file and the faxman log file should be created or appended to.  Obviously there will be no port logs until after the ports are detected and in use.

I was incorrect in my assessment that the default location is System32.  As you noted, on 64 bit machines, the default location is SysWOW64.  Thanks for pointing that out.

When sending us the files, please note this forum posting so we can keep track of it.  Thanks,

    Brian

    Hi,

Actually there is no file was updated after the autodetect. I have sent you two pictures of file list and the file "FAXMAN" generated by installation.

Re: Does FAXMAN4 V4.6 work on WIN 7(32bit) and (64bit)?

    KC,

I recently installed FaxMan SDK 4.6 on my Windows 7 x64 laptop.  First off, you are correct that the icons between 4.4 and 4.6 are different.  The 4.4 desktop icon correctly has the security shield (indicating that it requires an administrator priviledges to run the app) and the 4.6 desktop icon does not have the overlay.  It should and there's no reason that I can see (when reviewing the build steps) as to why the security sheild overlay is missing.  We will look into this and fix it for future releases of FaxMan SDK.

Onto the other issue: autodetect not detecting your modem in 4.6.  I was getting the same results as you until I ran FaxMan.exe as a service under an administrator account.  So, open up the command line tool as an administrator.  CD to the FaxMan.exe file under SysWOW64.  Then type in the following command:

    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\FaxMan /install

This command will install the FaxMan engine as an automatically starting Windows Service with the correct permissions.  You should then have no problems with the autodetect functionality.

Please let me know if this solved your situation.

Re: Does FAXMAN4 V4.6 work on WIN 7(32bit) and (64bit)?

    Hi Brianb,

I followed you instruction but no luck! It could not create FAXMAN4 service as I done on other platform, I did check every time after ran the command FAXMAN4.EXE /install even reboot the computer.

In addition, I did try to run the above command in C:\Program files (x86)\FAXMAN4 folder, same result, no service was created in windows. I sure that the command was correct as I could saw in TASKMANAGER, the CPU's usage was went up a bit when I run the command but nothing happen afterwards.

Also, I checked the access rights on both folders FAXMAN4 and SYSWOW64. Originally after installed FAXMAN4.6 both folders were not allowed to write, then I changed the access rights on FAXMAN4 folder, however, SYSWOW64 not allowed to change, but the result are the same, service could not be created and AUTODETECT are not working.

I am testing on WIN7 PRO(64bit), let me know what should I check.

    Regards,

    KC

We've carried this conversation offline.  But I wanted to update this forum post to indicate that you need to install FaxMan as a service as an Administrator by running the command line tool as an Administrator.  Works 100% of the time in all of my testing.

    Hi All,

The most important step is "Opened up command line as an Administrator (by right clicking on Command Prompt in Start Menu and seleting Run as Administrator item)" otherwise the command prompt is run as an User.

    Hello.

Can youtell me how far back (release-level) wise Windows 7 64-bit support goes?  I'm running 4.4.5 under VB6.

    Thanks!

    Wendell

    Hi Wendell,

4.6 is the first release to include support for 64 bit printer drivers on operating systems including Windows 7.

We always recommend that our customers upgrade to the latest releases when possible.  In your case, you can upgrade to FaxMan SDK 4.6 for free.  You'll just need to log in to the My Products page on our website: http://www.data-tech.com/myproducts/login.aspx

You'll see a link for your product labeld Download Updates.
